Don Domenico Pestarino nacque a Mornese il 5 gennaio 1817, settimo di quindici figli, da famiglia benestante e profondamente cristiana.
Iniziò gli studi presso i Padri Scolopi di Ovada, per poi trasferirsi in seminario ad Acqui Terme e successivamente a Genova, dove venne ordinato sacerdote all’età di 22 anni. Nel 1847 tornò nel suo paese natale come collaboratore dell’anziano parroco Don Lorenzo Ghio; fu in questi anni che si espresse la sua opera di apostolato, predicazione e catechismo a favore degli abitanti di Mornese.
Fu il direttore spirituale di Maria Mazzarello, che spinse nella sua opera caritatevole a favore delle giovani del paese; ebbe una grande intesa con Don Bosco e con lui promosse la costruzione del Collegio per i giovani mornesini, che fu poi destinato nell’agosto 1872 ad ospitare la prima comunità delle Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice. Impegnato nel sociale, fu Consigliere Comunale e Assessore alla Scuola e all’Igiene. Morì improvvisamente il 15 maggio 1874, all’età di 57 anni.

Don Domenico Pestarino was born on January 5, 1817 in Mornese, to a well-off and devoted Christian family, seventh of 15 children.
He began his studies at the Fathers Scolopi of Ovada, then moved to a seminary in Acqui Terme and later to Genoa, where he was ordained priest at the age of 22.
In 1847 he returned to his hometown as a collaborator of the elderly parish priest Don Lorenzio Ghio; during these years he spread the word of the Gospel, preached and taught catechism in favor of Mornese inhabitants.
He was the spiritual leader of Maria Mazzarello, who puts much of herself into charitable work for the town youngsters; he had good fellowship with Don Bosco and together with him encouraged the construction of the Boarding School for Mornese youngsters, which was intended to host the first community of the Daughers of Maria Ausiliatrice in August 1872. Involved in the social work, he was a town councilor for the Schools and Public Health issues.
He died unexpectedly on May 15, 1874 at the age of 57

En 1847, il retourne dans son village natal et devient collaborateur du vieux curé Don Lorenzo Ghio. C'est au cours de ces années que son travail d'apostolat, de prédication et de catéchisme a été exprimé en faveur des habitants de Mornese.
Il était le directeur spirituel de Maria Mazzarello, qui a poussé dans son œuvre charitable en faveur des jeunes du village. Il a eu un grand accord avec Don Bosco et avec lui a promu la construction du collège pour le jeunes de Mornese, qui a ensuite été destiné en août 1872 pour accueillir la première communauté des filles de Marie Auxiliatrice. Engagé dans le social, il a été conseiller municipal et adjoint de l'école et de l'hygiène. Il mourut soudainement le 15 mai 1874, à l'âge de 57 ans.

Nach der Schule bei den Padri Scolopi in Ovada studierte er zuerst im bischöflichen Seminar in Acqui Terme und anschließend in Genua, wo er im Alter von 22 Jahren die Ordination als Priester empfing. Im Jahre 1847 kehrte er in sein Heimatsdorf als Mitarbeiter des alten Pfarrers Don Lorenzo Ghio zurück. In diesen Jahren entwickelte er sich als wahrer Apostel, Prediger und Lehrer für die Bürger von Mornese. Als Seelsorger führte er Maria Mazzarello und unterstützte ihre Entwicklung und ihr Wirken zugunsten der jungen Frauen des Dorfes. Don Pestarino arbeitete im Einklang mit Don Bosco und unternahm zusammen mit ihm den Bau des „Collegio“ für die Erziehung der Jungen von Mornese, wo er im August 1872 die erste Gemeinschaft der „Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice“ ansiedelte. Als sozial engagierter Bürger wirkte er im Gemeinderat als Verantwortlicher für Bildung und Hygiene. Unerwartet starb er am 15. Mai 1874 im Alter von 57 Jahren.
