DON LUIGI MAZZARELLO, GIUSTO FRA LE NAZIONI
Don Luigi Mazzarello nacque a Mornese il 13 settembre 1885 da Giuseppe Mazzarello e Angela Lerma e fu battezzato lo stesso giorno. Cresimato il 1° giugno 1882 e compiuti gli studi ginnasiali, vestì l'abito clericale l'11 giugno 1904 e fu ordinato sacerdote il 13 agosto 1911 nella cattedrale di Acqui Terme dal Vescovo Disma Marchese. Già il 15 ottobre 1912 era Viceparroco a Castelrocchero, per poi passare a S. Giorgio Scarampi. Sacerdote dinamico e coraggioso, aperto a ogni forma di apostolato, durante la I. Guerra Mondiale fu al fronte. Dalla zia Caterina Mazzarello, direttrice dell’Istituto delle Nuove Orsoline a Mornese, ereditò la Casa dell'Immacolata (accanto alla Parrocchiale). Si dedicò all'insegnamento all’Università Italiana di Tunisi e divenne Cappellano dell’Emigrazione dal 1. Gennaio 1926, accompagnando le navi della Compagnia Generale Italiana verso il Sudamerica. Famosa una sua escursione sulle Ande, dove celebrò una messa in quota. In seguito fu benvoluto Cappellano nella Diocesi di Losanna, in Svizzera, fino a tutto il 1937. Ne tornò con una buona pensione e dal 1. Gennaio 1938 si reinserì nella Diocesi di Acqui: per motivi di famiglia chiese infatti di essere ravvicinato alla sorella, che portò come perpetua al Santuario della Rocchetta di Lerma, dove divenne Cappellano per molti anni, fino alla sua morte, il 25 ottobre 1959. Durante la II Guerra Mondiale, dal 1943 al 1945, ospitò alla Rocchetta due famiglie ebree, i Soria e i Levi, per salvarle dalla deportazione. Durante tre sopralluoghi ostili da parte di nazifascisti, gli ospiti ebrei vennero nascosti nella cripta, nelle tombe degli Spinola. Il 12 aprile 2012 lo Yad Vashem di Gerusalemme ha riconosciuto a Don Luigi Mazzarello il titolo di Giusto fra le Nazioni.
FATHER LUIGI MAZZARELLO, “RIGHTEOUS AMONG THE NATIONS”
Father Luigi Mazzarello was born in Mornese on 13th September 1885 to Giuseppe Mazzarello and Angela Lerma and baptised on the same day. He was confirmed on 1st June 1882 and after the middle school, he received the clerical habit on 11th June 1904; then he was ordained a priest on 13th August 1911 in the cathedral of Acqui Terme by Bishop Disma Marchese. On 15th October 1912, he was already Vice-Parish priest in Castelrocchero, before moving on to S. Giorgio Scarampi. He was a dynamic and courageous priest, open to every form of apostolate. During World War I he was at the front. From his aunt Caterina Mazzarello, director of the Institute of the Nuove Orsoline in Mornese, he inherited the House of the Immaculate (next to the parish church). He devoted himself to teaching at the Italian University of Tunis, and became Chaplain of Emigration on 1st January 1926, accompanying the ships of the Italian General Company to South America. He is famous for an excursion to the Andes, where he celebrated a Mass at high altitude. He was later admired chaplain in the Diocese of Lausanne, Switzerland, until the end of 1937. He returned with a good pension, and on 1st January 1938 re-joined the diocese of Acqui: for family reasons he asked to be brought closer to his sister, that he took as a maid at the Sanctuary of Rocchetta in Lerma, where he became chaplain for many years, until his death on 25th October 1959. During World War II, from 1943 to 1945, he hosted two Jewish families, the Sorias and the Levis, in order to save them from deportation. During three hostile Nazi-Fascist raids, the Jewish guests were hidden in the crypt, in the Spinola family tombs. On 12th April 2012, the Yad Vashem of Jerusalem recognised him the title of “Righteous among the Nations”.

Père Luigi Mazzarello est né à Mornèse le 13 septembre 1885 de Giuseppe Mazzarello et Angela Lerma et a été baptisé le même jour. Il a été confirmé le 1er juin 1882 et, après avoir terminé ses études secondaires, il a reçu l'habit clérical le 11 juin 1904 et a été ordonné prêtre le 13 août 1911, dans la cathédrale d'Acqui Terme par Monseigneur Disma Marchese. Le 15 octobre 1912, il était déjà vice-prêtre à Castelrocchero, avant de passer à S. Giorgio Scarampi. Il était un prêtre dynamique et courageux, ouvert à chaque forme d'apostolat. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il était au front. De sa tante Caterina Mazzarello, directrice de l'Institut des Nuove Orsoline de Mornese, il hérite de la Maison de l'Immaculée (à côté de l'église paroissiale). Il se consacre à l'enseignement, à l'université italienne de Tunis, et devient chapelain de l'Émigration à partir du 1er janvier 1926, accompagnant les navires de la Compagnie générale italienne en Amérique du Sud. Il est connu pour une excursion dans les Andes, où il a célébré une Messe à haute altitude. Ensuite, il a été un chapelain apprécié dans le diocèse de Lausanne, en Suisse, jusqu'à la fin du 1937. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, de 1943 à 1945, il a accueilli deux familles juives, les Soria et les Levi, pour les sauver de la déportation. Pendant trois raids hostiles des nazis-fascistes, les hôtes juifs ont été cachés dans la crypte, à l’intérieur des tombes de la famille Spinola. Le 12 avril 2012, Yad Vashem à Jérusalem a reconnu à Don Luigi Mazzarello le titre de “Juste parmi les Nations”.
DON LUIGI MAZZARELLO, GERECHTER UNTER DEN VÖLKERN
Don Luigi Mazzarello wurde am 13. September 1885 in Mornese als Kind von Giuseppe Mazzarello und Angela Lerma geboren und getauft.
Nach der Firmung am 1. Juni 1892 und dem Gymnasialabschluss trat er am 11. Juni 1904 ins Seminar ein und wurde am 13. August 1911 in der Kathedrale von Acqui Terme durch Bischof Disma Marchese zum Priester geweiht. Bereits am 12. Oktober 1912 war er Vizepfarrer von Castel Rocchero, später von S. Giorgio Scarampi. Dynamisch und mutig, bereit zu jeder Form des Apostolats, diente er im ersten Weltkrieg als Kaplan an der Front. Von seiner Tante Caterina Mazzarello, Leiterin der Schule der Neuen Ursulinen in Mornese, erbte er das Haus der Immacolata am Kirchplatz. Selbst im Lehramt tätig, unterrichtete er an der Italienischen Universität in Tunis. Am 1. Januar 1926 wurde Don Luigi als Kaplan der Auswanderer bestellt und begleitete die Schiffe der Società Generale Italiana di Navigazione nach Südamerika. Berühmt ist seine Exkursion in die Anden, wo er auf Bergeshöhn eine Messe zelebrierte. Danach wirkte er jahrelang als beliebter Kaplan in der Schweizer Diözese von Lausanne. Ende 1937 kehrte er mit einer guten Rente zurück und wurde Anfang 1938 wieder in seine Heimat-Diözese Acqui eingegliedert. Aus Familiengründen bat er, in die Nähe seiner Schwester versetzt zu werden, die ihn als Pfarrhilfe zum Wallfahrtsort Rocchetta begleitete. Er blieb dort jahrelang als Kaplan bis zu seinem Tod am 25. Oktober 1959.
Im Zweiten Weltkrieg (1943-1945) beherbergte er dort neben anderen di beiden jüdischen Levi- und Soria-Familien, um sie vor der Deportation zu retten. Bei feindlichen Kontrollen durch Soldaten oder Nazifaschisten verbarg er die jüdischen Gäste in den Gräbern der Familie Spinola. Am 12 April 2012 hat die Institution Yad Vashem von Jerusalem Don Luigi Mazzarello als “Gerechter unter den Völkern” geehrt.
